Thank you to Waitrose – Community Matters

Waitrose have started a new scheme called Community Matters. Each month, the branch donates £1,000 between three local charities.  Shoppers are given green tokens at the checkout, and at the exit they post the tokens into one of three boxes representing each charity.  At the end of the month the money is divided in proportion to the percentage of the tokens given by the shoppers.

In 2009 we received a generous donation from this fund which enabled us to purchase:

Many thanks to the community who shop at Waitrose and chose to put their green token into our bucket!

Many thanks to Andy and Sarah

Sarah & Andrew

Roger’s eldest son Andy married Sarah on the 11th August 2008 in Northern Ireland . Following a moving church service the reception was held at the beautiful Galgorm Resort & Spa. During his bridegroom’s speech Andy spoke about how much his father was missed and talked about Roger’s past contribution to charitable work and in particular his fundraising for the Ravensbourne Project.  Andy and Sarah then presented to Roger’s sister Barbara Every a substantial donation to be added to the Roger Giles Memorial Fund created in his memory.

The Board of Trustees would like to wish Andy and Sarah every happiness in their new life together and to thank them for remembering our work in this way by making such a generous donation to our work and to Roger’s Memorial Fund.

The Roger Giles Memorial Tournament

“We have a dream. Nothing in this life happens by itself. All things originate with an idea, then a dream and most important of all ACTION.”

The above statement was made in 1985 by Roger Giles, former Chair of Ravensbourne Project. Sadly Roger passed away in the summer of 2004 but happily he was able to see the result of his and others actions over the years with the opening of Coombe House.

Roger had been involved with Ravensbourne since 1977 and undertaken many fundraising activities over the years. The Roger Giles Memorial Fund has been established by his family to continue the fundraising efforts of Roger and in the Summer of 2005 the first major fundraising event was held (details below). When this amount is added to the sum of £2,715 which was donated when he died and £460 donated on his birthday in October and from donations (in lieu of Chritsmas presents) and fundraising at New Year, the total raised so far is £5,238.00. This is a fantastic amount and a massive thank you to everybody involved. Julie and the boys will be discussing with the Project how best the money can be spent during the coming year, meanwhile it continues to earn interest.

Bowling has always been a major part of the Giles’ family life and it seemed appropriate to hold a memorial tournament in his honour and to raise money fro Ravensbourne Project. Over 50 bowlers took part from absolute beginners to “pros” and a total of £2,061! Due to the success of the event there are initial plans to hold it again in 2006. Ravensbourne Project would like to thank all of Roger’s family and friends and are currently discussing with the family the best way to utilise the money raised.
